2017/2018 Call for Submissions

Want to publish a paper you completed over the summer or during your independent research course? The Journal of Undergraduate Life Sciences (JULS) is the University of Toronto’s student-run, peer-reviewed academic journal featuring the work of undergraduates. After a decade of showcasing undergraduate research at the University of Toronto, JULS is now accepting submissions for its 12th issue!

The call for submissions is now on! If you are an author of innovative and insightful research (either in primary or review form), JULS welcomes the submission of an abstract until November 10th, 2017. JULS accepts submissions from all science disciplines, including chemistry and physics.

JULS is also accepting news article submissions until January 31st, 2018. Share your insights on academic conferences or university events, or highlight some research from the university that you think was notable (it could be research that you worked on)!

2017/2018 Call for Executive Staff

The 2017/2018 call for executive staff has now ended.

JULS is constantly seeking enthusiastic and dedicated students to assume staff positions for the upcoming 2017-2018 issue. Together, we will work towards producing a professional-level journal that will showcase some of the finest research work achieved by undergraduate students here at the University of Toronto. Please see below the openings for the senior executive staff positions.

Application Requirements:

  1. All returning undergraduates at the University of Toronto to the Fall/Winter 2017-2018 term are eligible to apply for the listed positions, although previous experience and/or involvement with JULS is strongly encouraged.
  2. Please read over each position’s requirements and fill out the relevant application form(s) found below.
  3. All candidates must submit a curriculum vitae (CV) along with their application, highlighting previous research and other co-curricular experiences and skills.
  4. The deadline to submit the relevant documents is Wednesday, September 27th, 2017 at 11:59pm.

Senior Editors (3-4 positions) → Apply

  • Review and edit primary and secondary research articles
  • Support in securing faculty reviewers for submitted articles
  • Assist in organizing JULS events (e.g. clubs days, issue distribution, etc.)

Layout Managers (2 positions) → Apply

  • Assist in reviewing and selecting layout associates
  • Oversee all aspects of designing the layout for the journal
  • Support in general management of JULS and the JULS website
  • NOTE: This position requires a significant time commitment during the second semester.

Review Board Managers (2 positions) → Apply

  • Assist in reviewing and selecting the editorial review board
  • Assign articles for review to student and faculty review boards
  • Communicate with the editorial review board, senior editors, faculty, and editors-in-chief while overseeing and managing the peer review process

News Managers (1-2 positions) → Apply

  • Review and edit news proposals and articles
  • Update the JULS website and Facebook page with current news/debates – must be familiar with social media
  • Assist in organizing JULS events (e.g. clubs days, issue distribution, etc.)

External Affairs Managers (2 positions) → Apply

  • Communicating with external organizations on behalf of JULS (primarily to obtain funding)
  • Recruit authors as well as other general JULS staff
  • Advertising JULS and organizing distribution of both online and printed issues of the journal

JULS Volume 11, Issue 1 (Spring 2017)

We are pleased to finally release the 2017 issue of JULS. Thanks especially to all our staff and faculty who have contributed so much to make this issue possible, as well as to all the authors for the work and patience.

In this issue, we celebrate the undergraduate research that occurs across the University of Toronto, continuing the legacy that the university has created over the past 190 years.

Print issues will be available shortly in Gerstein.

2016/2017 Call for Staff

The 2016-17 call for staff has now ended.

JULS, the University of Toronto’s oldest and largest peer-reviewed undergraduate science journal, is seeking enthusiastic and dedicated students to assume staff positions for the upcoming 2016-2017 edition. Staff play an integral role in production of the journal, both in editing and formatting. Please see below the openings for the staff of JULS 2016-2017.

Editorial Review Board (8-10 positions) → Apply

Are you an enthusiastic student interested in learning more about the undergraduate research going on within the University? JULS invites you to be part of our three-tiered peer review process as a member of our Editorial Review Board!

  • Provide feedback regarding the scholarly merits of a scientific work together with a written basis for the reviewer’s opinion
  • Provide constructive criticism to help the author improve the manuscript
  • Maintain confidentiality of the author’s work

Layout Staff (5-8 positions) → Apply

Do you have an eye for the aesthetic and an interest in executing the creative vision of a multi-faceted publication? JULS invites you to participate by contributing to our layout team!

  • Use of graphical software, such as Adobe InDesign, for the production of article proofs and the final issue in a timely manner.
  • Use of graphical software to assist the external affairs team in designing promotional material for the journal, such as fliers.
  • Compliance with the publication guidelines set forth by editors-in-chief and layout managers
